Sri Lanka, Sept. 16 -- The 'Guru Daruwo Ekamuthuwa' (Teachers' Children Union) has called off its hunger strike at the Ministry of Education in Isurupaya after reaching an understanding with officials from the Presidential Secretariat.
The group launched the protest over the government's decision to revoke the right of academic and non-academic staff with three years of service to enroll their children in the same national schools where they work.
After staging several days of demonstrations in front of the Presidential Secretariat and failing to secure a resolution during discussions with Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, the union moved its protest to the Ministry of Education and began a fast.
