Sri Lanka, Aug. 2 -- An inmate at Galle Prison escaped from the facility in the early hours of this morning (02), the Prisons Commissioner's Office said.

The prison authorities identified the escapee as a suspect named Agampodi Dileep Sampath, a resident of Kuligoda, Galagoda, Ambalangoda.

He is reported to have been held in custody since June 22, in connection with four cases involving housebreaking and theft charges being heard before the Balapitiya Magistrate's Court.

It was discovered during a routine check of inmates this morning (02) that the suspect has escaped from the prison's security wall.

It has also come to light that he had previously escaped while being held at Angunakolapelessa Prison.
