Sri Lanka, Sept. 3 -- Examination of petitions filed challenging the Anti-Corruption Amendment Bill presented to Parliament by the government commenced before the Supreme Court.

The petitions are being examined today (3) before a three-judge Supreme Court bench comprising Shiran Gooneratne, Mahinda Samayawardhena, and Sampath Wijeratne.

Fourteen petitions were presented by parties including former Minister Professor Gamini Lakshman Peiris challenging the bill.

Provisions contained in the proposed draft bill violate fundamental rights, including sovereignty of the people guaranteed by the Constitution, petitioners state.

The right to information is also curtailed through this draft bill, petitioners mention.
