Sri Lanka, Aug. 20 -- Persons with disabilities in Sri Lanka can now obtain driving licenses following the removal of long-standing barriers.
Speaking at a media briefing, Parliamentarian Sugath Wasantha de Silva announced that new provisions will allow individuals with hearing or speech impairments and those with partial visual capacity to apply.
He said the change follows years of discussions aimed at ensuring mobility rights for the over 1.6 million persons living with disabilities in the country.
De Silva, who also serves on the advisory committee to the Ministry of Transport, stated that one of the key challenges was the lack of suitable medical certifications and vehicle adaptations.
