Sri Lanka, Oct. 8 -- The Director General of Health Services, Dr Asela Gunawardena, has stated that approximately 10% of Sri Lanka's population suffers from various mental health conditions, with about 2% experiencing severe mental health disorders.

Speaking at a ceremony today (8 ) at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute to mark World Mental Health Day, the DGHS revealed that nearly 37,000 patients were treated at mental health clinics in 2024 alone.

Dr Gunawardena noted that mental health disorders are also a contributing factor to suicide, and stressed that many individuals are unaware they have a condition. He urged the public to focus more attention on mental health.
