Sri Lanka, Aug. 22 -- A new tax category has been proposed for importing electric vehicles that also contain a fuel-powered motor.

The Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Anil Jayantha Fernando, said that these vehicles do not currently fall under the existing Customs duties, leading to some importers paying higher taxes than intended.

Speaking in Parliament, Fernando explained that while current regulations cover petrol, diesel, and purely electric vehicles, this new type requires its own classification.

A Cabinet-appointed committee has recommended a new Harmonized System (HS) code to ensure fair taxation.

The new category is proposed to be positioned between electric and hybrid vehicles.
