Sri Lanka, Aug. 4 -- A proposal requesting the appointment of a special Select Committee to recommend measures for expediting Sri Lanka's mounting backlog of court cases was formally handed over to Speaker of Parliament Jagath Wickramaratne by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

The move comes as statistics from the Ministry of Justice reveal that more than 1.1 million cases are currently pending in the judicial system, creating severe delays in the delivery of justice.

The proposal was signed yesterday under the leadership of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, together with the SJB parliamentary group.

The Opposition Leader and his MPs presented the proposal to the Speaker in Parliament today (04).
