Sri Lanka, Sept. 23 -- Former Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando, who had been arrested and remanded by the Bribery Commission, was released on bail today (23) by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama.

Fernando was arrested over allegations of causing a loss of Rs. 105 million to the government by allegedly awarding funds to eight favoured contractors for urban and rural road development projects in 2013.

The Magistrate ordered his release on three personal bails of Rs. 1 million each and a cash bail of Rs. 50,000, while also imposing a travel ban.

Investigating officers told the court the arrest followed a complaint filed in 2013 by a group of former council members with the Presidential Secretariat through the local government...
