Sri Lanka, Aug. 9 -- The Agrarian Insurance Board has announced that Rs. 1,484 million has been paid out as crop damage compensation for the 2024/2025 Maha season.

The compensation was given for damage caused by drought, floods, and wild elephant attacks.

A total of 74,958 farmers received payments for 87,690 acres of land cultivated with crops such as paddy, maize, big onions, chillies, and potatoes.

The Agrarian Insurance Board said that the compensation was provided under a free crop insurance scheme to encourage farmers to engage in more cultivation.

The payments were capped at a maximum of Rs. 100,000 per hectare.
