Sri Lanka, Aug. 23 -- In a statement made before his arrest, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe asserted that his actions were for the benefit of the country, not for personal matters.
"I acted for the country, not for personal gain. It seems today that the true face of this regime is now coming out. I do not accept any of the political activities taking place everywhere," Wickremesinghe said.
The statement was released to the media today during a special press conference held by the United National Party Deputy Leader, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.
The former president, who was remanded in custody, was admitted to the prison hospital last night on medical advice.
