Sri Lanka, Sept. 19 -- In a landmark decision, the Anuradhapura Magistrate's Court has ordered that all railway stations between Vavuniya and Mahawa must be made accessible to differently abled people.

The ruling follows a writ application filed last December by the president of the Association of Women with Disabilities N.G. Kamalawathi.

The court rejected the government's claim that it didn't have enough money to upgrade facilities.

Magistrate Nalinda Hewawasam stated that protecting vulnerable groups is a duty of the judiciary.

The government has been directed to build the necessary infrastructure and to submit regular progress reports to the court.

The petitioner, N.G. Kamalawathi, was also awarded Rs. 100,000 in case fees.
