Sri Lanka, Feb. 26 -- An investigation into the controversial import of low-quality coal began following a directive from the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Infrastructure and Strategy Development. The Public Utilities Commission is conducting the probe to address concerns surrounding the procurement.

The Chairman of the Medical Professionals' Trade Union Alliance, Specialist Dr Chamal Sanjeeva, filed a formal complaint with the Bribery Commission yesterday (25) requesting a full inquiry into the matter.

Member of Parliament S.M. Marikkar stated during a media briefing in Colombo that the importation of sub-standard coal will impose a loss of over 1,800 million rupees on the public.
