Sri Lanka, Aug. 24 -- A group of protesters gathered at the sacred site of Katusaaya in Mihintale, engaging in a ritual coconut-smashing ceremony as a symbolic act of defiance against the arrest of former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Among the participants were local councillors from the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), along with former representatives and prominent agricultural leaders.

The demonstrators expressed strong opposition to what they claim is a politically motivated move.
