Sri Lanka, Aug. 12 -- Residents of Mannar held a protest last night, the 11th of August, blocking vehicles transporting wind turbines for the second phase of a wind power project.
The protesters are demanding that the project be stopped. They claim that the project and ilmenite mining are causing land issues for the area's traditional residents. They also say that migratory birds have stopped visiting the Mannar tourist paradise as a result.
The protest forced the drivers to stop their vehicles, and police officers were later deployed to protect the cargo. Member of Parliament Selvam Adaikkalanathan and former Member of Parliament Charles Nirmalanathan were also present at the protest.
