Sri Lanka, Feb. 14 -- Professor Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri states that a presidential pardon should be granted to the 12 individuals sentenced to death for the assault and murder of former Member of Parliament Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer.

The Professor points out that everyone who stood for the 'Aragalaya' movement, including himself, bears responsibility for the incident.

His remarks follow the February 10 ruling by the Gampaha Permanent Trial-at-Bar, which delivered death sentences to 12 out of 41 defendants in the case involving the late SLPP Parliamentarian.

The court proceedings resulted in a divided verdict where 23 defendants were acquitted and released.
