Sri Lanka, May 21 -- An investigation is underway following the disappearance of 42 antique paintings from the National Art Gallery in Colombo.

The Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, made the announcement in Parliament today.

Responding to a question raised by Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahman, the minister revealed that the loss was uncovered following a formal stock survey report compiled for the year 2015.

Authorities are investigating how the priceless collection vanished from the premises during the gallery's extended maintenance and storage closures.
