Sri Lanka, Aug. 12 -- The Constitutional Council has approved the President's proposal to appoint Priyantha Weerasooriya as the country's 37th Inspector General of Police.
The approval was given at the Constitutional Council meeting held today (12th). This follows an earlier meeting on the 7th of August, where a final decision could not be reached.
The appointment comes after former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon was removed from his post by the President. He was born on the 9th of February, 1969, in the Dodangoda area. He joined the police department in 1988 as a constable and served in the Police Special Task Force and the Traffic and Crimes Divisions until 1992.
