Sri Lanka, April 19 -- Government approval was granted to recruit 10,000 new officers to mitigate the severe shortage within the Sri Lanka Police Department, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya stated in Kandy.

Preliminary work for these recruitments has already commenced.

Plans are underway to recruit approximately 1,000 Sub-Inspectors before the end of this month as part of this programme.

Additionally, a gazette notification was issued for the recruitment of 2,500 Police Constables.

A total of 1,200 officers retired over the past three months upon reaching the mandatory age limit, while others aged 55 and above are retiring due to illness or personal reasons.
