Sri Lanka, Sept. 19 -- Police have been granted permission to detain and question the suspected gunman in the murder of social activist Dan Priyasad for seven days.

The order was issued by the Kegalle Magistrate's Court today after the suspect and a woman who was with him were produced before the court.

The suspected gunman, a former army soldier believed to have worked as a contract killer, was arrested yesterday by officers from the Kegalle Divisional Crimes Investigation Unit.

The police have previously arrested several other suspects over the murder, but this is the first time they have apprehended the suspected gunman.
