Sri Lanka, Aug. 17 -- The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) says that plastic debris from the MSC Elsa 3 ship, which sank off the coast of India, continues to wash up along Sri Lanka's coastline.

MEPA stated that cleanup efforts are underway on beaches in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Puttalam, Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara, and Galle districts.

The cleanup has been ongoing since July 13, with more than 5,500 civilians taking part.

The Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC Elsa 3 sank 38 nautical miles off the coast of Kerala, India, after a water leak.4 At the time, the vessel was carrying 643 containers.
