Sri Lanka, Feb. 17 -- The Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal ) Bill became law today after the Speaker officially endorsed it.
Under this new legislation, pensions previously granted to Members of Parliament and the widows of deceased MPs are cancelled.
The vote to eliminate these pensions passed with a significant majority of 152 votes, while only two votes were cast against the move.
During the session, the opposition proposed an amendment to the bill to prevent the pension removal from applying retrospectively.
A separate vote on this amendment resulted in 148 votes against it and only 4 votes in favour.
