Sri Lanka, Aug. 8 -- The Northwestern Province team has won the inaugural "SpoGomi" garbage collection competition in Sri Lanka and will now represent the country at the SpoGomi World Cup in Tokyo, Japan, in October.

The competition, which originated in Japan as a creative approach to waste management, was held for the first time in Sri Lanka.

It began at the provincial level in April, with the final held recently at Mount Lavinia Park.

Organised under the guidance of the Shiro Plastic Movement organisation, teams were required to collect garbage from a selected area, sort it into five categories, and were judged based on the total weight of the collected waste.
