Sri Lanka, Nov. 4 -- The Minister of Power informed the Cabinet that the President had instructed the relevant authorities not to proceed with further wind power projects on Mannar Island without the consent of the residents, taking into account the environmental and social issues raised by the public in the Mannar area.
It was accordingly decided to grant the Cabinet's agreement to act on this instruction.
Mannar Island was identified as an area with high wind potential according to the nationwide renewable resource deployment plan. Three wind power projects were planned for the island.
Operations for one of those projects, the Thambapawani Wind Power Plant, began in 2021.
