Sri Lanka, Sept. 27 -- Sri Lanka will no longer need to import salt, as local production is now sufficient to meet national demand, said Marketing Manager, Lanka Salt, Hambantota, Harsa Abeysuriya.
Speaking to Hiru Web News, he said around 40,000 metric tons have already been harvested by them during the current Maha season, with further stocks expected after the rains.
"We also have ample buffer stocks in storage to meet any future demand," he added.
During the recent scarcity, imported salt was brought into the market, and some of these consignments - including containers yet to be cleared at customs - are still in circulation.
Abeysuriya noted that production at the Puttalam Saltern has also resumed, strengthening supply.
