Sri Lanka, Oct. 11 -- A new national programme aimed at delivering a sustainable solution to Sri Lanka's severe human-elephant conflict has been launched.

The initiative, a joint effort by the Ministry of Environment and the 'Clean Sri Lanka' Programme, commenced yesterday (October 10) under the theme, "Beyond the Electric Fence: Towards a Sustainable Solution."

The launch event was centred around the Tabbowa Tank in Karuwalagaswewa, Puttalam.

The primary goal of the scheme is to foster coexistence by developing elephant-friendly ecosystems and establishing elephant sustenance zones.

This is intended to provide wild elephants with sufficient resources away from human settlements.
