Sri Lanka, Aug. 22 -- Professor Sewwandi Jayakody has been named the new Chairperson of the Marine Environment Protection Council (MEPC).

The appointment letter was handed over by the Minister of Environment, Dammika Patabendi, at a ceremony today.

Professor Jayakody is a Senior Professor at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka's Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries.

She brings a wealth of experience, holding a PhD in Zoology from the University of Aberdeen, UK, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Wildlife Conservation and Management from the Wildlife Institute of India.

Her research specialisms include coastal ecosystems, the effects of human activity, and environmental policy.
