Sri Lanka, Dec. 21 -- The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) has launched an urgent investigation into the stability of the slopes along Rajapihilla Mawatha to determine if the structural integrity of Mahamaya Girls' College is at risk.

On 20 December, a high-level team including Kandy District Chief Geologist Samantha Bogahapitiya, Engineer Hasitha Karunadhipathi, and Land Use Officer Thanuja Perera conducted an on-site inspection.

Speaking to the press, Geologist Samantha Bogahapitiya clarified that the current situation is not a classic landslide. Instead, it appears to be a result of poor rainwater management and soil embankments that were not technically stabilised when the road was constructed.
