Sri Lanka, Oct. 26 -- Minister orders independent probe into death of man in Homagama Police custody

Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala has instructed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya to conduct an urgent and independent investigation into the reported death of a person who was in the custody of the Homagama Police.

The Minister has also instructed the IGP to take further legal action based on the findings of the post-mortem examination and the investigation into the incident.

The Minister emphasised that police officers have a responsibility to ensure the safety of individuals taken into custody and to protect their human dignity.
