Sri Lanka, Sept. 25 -- The government plans to begin issuing the Electronic National Identity Card, or e-NIC, by the middle of next year.

This announcement was made today (25) by the Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weerarathne.

Speaking to the media, the minister stated that the e-NIC is designed to simplify identity verification and securely store a person's biometric data.

Once operational, the new system is expected to help combat online fraud, reduce the need for repeated document certification for both government and private services, and provide stronger protection against online scammers.
