Sri Lanka, Aug. 8 -- More than 12,000 passengers arrived at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre within a three-hour period yesterday (7) to travel to their hometowns for the three-day long weekend.

According to the Director of Operations for the National Transport Commission, Sherine Athukorala, passengers arrived at the transport hub between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The majority of the passengers were travelling to Galle, Matara, and Hambantota.

Due to the sudden increase in the number of passengers, many had to wait for more than an hour at the centre.

Athukorala stated that measures were taken to deploy a new bus as soon as one departed to manage the large crowds.
