SriLanka, April 1 -- A 44-year-old resident of Kiriella lost his life yesterday (31) when an earth embankment collapsed while he worked at an unauthorized gem mine in the Wagawatta area of the Horana police division.

The individual was engaged in gem mining alongside a group of people in the illegal pit when a large mound of earth unexpectedly caved in on him.

Although bystanders rushed him to the Horana Hospital, hospital sources confirmed he had passed away before admission.

The remains currently lie at the Horana Hospital morgue, with the post-mortem examination scheduled for today (01).

Horana Police initiated a full investigation into the incident and the operation of the illegal mining site.
