Sri Lanka, July 29 -- A man was arrested yesterday (28) for allegedly killing and butchering a fishing cat, a highly protected and rare mammal.
Wildlife officers from the Galkiriyagama Wildlife Range Office made the arrest within the Kahalla-Pallekele Sanctuary.
Wildlife officials stated that the suspect was apprehended in the Karawilagala area of the sanctuary while butchering the killed fishing cat.
Following the arrest, a locally made gun was also discovered nearby.
According to wildlife officers, the killed fishing cat was a well-grown animal, approximately two feet tall and about six years old.
