Maize shortage threatens poultry production
Sri Lanka, Oct. 3 -- Delays in greenlighting maize imports risk driving up chicken meat and egg prices as the festive season approaches, according to the All Island Poultry Association of Sri Lanka.
Association President Ajith Gunasekara noted that animal feed manufacturers have had to resort to using rice as a substitute for maize, triggering a marked decline in overall poultry meat and egg production.
Compounding the crisis, approximately 20% of small-scale poultry producers have already exited the industry due to the acute lack of vital feed ingredients.
