JSA opposes extending judges' retirement age
Sri Lanka, July 26 -- A formal letter expressing strong opposition to the proposed constitutional amendment to extend the statutory retirement age of judges was sent to Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara on July 22, 2026 by the Judicial Service Association of Sri Lanka (JSA), representing district judges and magistrates.
Even under a backdrop where they would personally benefit from an extended tenure if this proposal is implemented, all 65 judges attending the special general meeting of the JSA voted unanimously against it in a secret ballot, marking the most notable feature.
