Sri Lanka, May 11 -- An inmate detained at Welikada Prison passed away this afternoon (11) after falling from a building, according to the Prison Media Spokesperson.

The deceased, a 29-year-old resident of Pasyala, was a prisoner sentenced to death in connection with the murder of former Member of Parliament Amarakeerthi Athukorala.

Prison officers took immediate steps to admit the inmate to the National Hospital for treatment as he remained in critical condition following the fall.

However, the Prison Media Spokesperson stated that the individual died after being admitted to the hospital.
