Sri Lanka, Aug. 6 -- India requested the Sri Lankan government to hold the long-overdue Provincial Council elections as soon as possible, the country's Ministry of External Affairs announced.

The statement noted that Indian Secretary to Ministry of External Affairs Vikram Misri has extended this request when he met President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday (05), during his one-day official visit to the island.

Discussions during the meeting covered projects supported by India, including assistance for Sri Lanka's recovery following Cyclone Ditwah, energy cooperation, updating the trade agreement, developing Trincomalee as an energy hub, modernising the Kankesanthurai Port, and the digital identity project.
