Health ministry issues ban on unhealthy school canteen food
Sri Lanka, June 20 -- A new circular was issued banning the sale of foods with high sugar content, fatty foods, and foods manufactured using processed meat, including hot dogs, burgers, pizzas, biscuits, cakes, and drink packets, in school canteens, according to the Consultant Medical Officer of the Nutrition Division of the Ministry of Health, Dr Monica Wijeratne.
She stated this while participating in a media briefing held at the Health Promotion Bureau.
Furthermore, a code of guidelines was also issued to regulate and supervise school canteens in this regard.
Health sectors revealed that obesity and overweight conditions among school children are currently rising significantly.
