Sri Lanka, Sept. 5 -- The foundation stone for a new post office building in Galewela, Matale District, was laid last afternoon (4) in a ceremony officiated by the Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr Nalinda Jayatissa.

The new, modern building, which is being funded by the Department of Posts, is estimated to cost Rs. 14.70 million.

The Minister said that the construction of the new Galewela Post Office is the first step in a programme to modernise the country's postal service.

He added that a sum of nearly Rs. 1,100 million was allocated in the March budget for the construction and modernisation of post offices, marking the first time such an amount has been allocated in recent history.
