Sri Lanka, Aug. 26 -- Former United National Party (UNP) Member of Parliament Akila Viraj Kariyawasam expressed his gratitude to everyone who dedicated their efforts to the case of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

He made these remarks to the media after the court's decision was announced.

Speaking on behalf of the UNP, Kariyawasam specifically noted that over 500 lawyers and a large number of people came in support.

He stated that their presence was an act of faith in judicial independence, which they had hoped for.

He also clarified that their support for Wickremesinghe was in response to what they viewed as an injustice and that they are not people who would take to the streets to defend corruption, fraud, or theft.
