Sri Lanka, Dec. 30 -- A former prison guard was taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) 16 years after a shooting incident at the Kalutara Prison resulted in the deaths of six inmates and serious injuries to four others. The department stated that the arrest followed an extensive inquiry conducted by its Homicide and Organized Crime Investigation Division.

The Incident

The event occurred on April 15, 2009. Investigations revealed that the suspect and several other officers utilized excessive force and discharged firearms during unrest sparked by a group of inmates attempting to escape by cutting through iron bars.
