Sri Lanka, Aug. 26 -- Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath has stated that the political recognition of upcountry Tamils as the "Malayaga People" is a profound gesture of respect and pride for the community.

In a statement on social media, the minister said the government is systematically enacting the necessary legal reforms to fulfil this commitment.

Herath pointed out that the "Malayaga People" are now officially registered on documents, including birth certificates.

He emphasised that they must be recognised as citizens and that their rights to homes, land, quality education, healthcare, and transportation facilities must be protected.
