Sri Lanka, July 31 -- A group of farmers utilizing water from the Puttalam - Mahakumbukkadawala - Padiyamaduwa reservoir are facing a predicament after a local farmers' organization decided to impose a fine of Rs. 10,000 on those who harvest their paddy before the date set at the seasonal meeting.

Approximately 300 acres of paddy have been cultivated in this area during the current Yala season using water from the reservoir.

According to the affected farmers, an agreement was reached at the season's meeting that cultivation should be completed before April 15, and harvesting should commence only after August 5.

Violators of this rule face not only the Rs. 10,000 fine but also the withholding of fertilizer for the subsequent season.
