Sri Lanka, Aug. 22 -- Excavations at a suspected mass grave site in Jaffna are expected to continue for another eight weeks, according to officials. So far, the skeletal remains of 141 individuals have been found at the Chemmani Sindhubathi cemetery. The remains were first discovered on 20 February 2025 by workers on a development project.
Following the initial finding, the Jaffna Magistrate's Court authorised the police to begin excavations. A team of experts has been overseeing the process, which has revealed the remains within a 165-square-metre area. The identities of the deceased and the circumstances of their deaths are currently unknown.
