Sri Lanka, Aug. 20 -- Following complaints from residents, Minister of Environment Dr. Dhammika Patabendi and Member of Parliament Samanmali Gunasinghe conducted a site visit yesterday (19) to the Attidiya Bird Sanctuary in Ratmalana to inspect unauthorized constructions and land reclamation.
The sanctuary, a declared bird sanctuary due to its unique wetland ecosystem, is home to a large number of local and migratory birds.
The Minister emphasized the critical importance of protecting this environmentally sensitive area.
The wetlands also serve a crucial role in preventing floods in surrounding areas, including Bellanwila, Boralesgamuwa, Papiliyana, Nugegoda, and Werahara, by absorbing excess rainwater.
