Elephant underpass construction between Galgamuwa and Ambanpola completed
Sri Lanka, Oct. 24 -- Construction of the elephant underpass at Kasikote, between Galgamuwa and Ambanpola, completed recently.
Development work on the underpass, built beneath the railway line in an area known for frequent elephant crossings, resumed in February this year.
The project initiated in 2025 aims to provide a safe passage for wild elephants to cross beneath the railway tracks, reducing the risk of train collisions and helping mitigate human-elephant conflict.
The underpass aims to allow elephants to move between habitats on either side of the railway line without crossing the tracks, improving safety for both wildlife and railway operations.
