Sri Lanka, July 31 -- A recent research study on crime in Sri Lanka has revealed that between 40 and 50 individuals are imprisoned every month as new criminals or drug users.

This finding was shared by D.M.S. Dhammika Bandara, a criminology expert and an external lecturer at the Sri Lanka Police Training College.

Bandara highlighted the significant economic impact of this trend, stating that approximately forty thousand labour contributions, vital to the country's economy, are lost each month due to these incarcerations.

Speaking to the media, he noted that current statistics indicate that the efforts of 47 police officers are required to monitor the activities of just one criminal.
