Sri Lanka, Sept. 28 -- The powers of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) are set to be enhanced, allowing it to forward reports confirming acts of fraud or corruption directly for investigation and prosecution, according to COPE Chairman, Dr. Nishantha Samarasinghe, MP.
Dr. Samarasinghe stated that the relevant proposal to increase COPE's powers was presented to Parliament last Friday (26).
The Member of Parliament pointed out that this expansion of powers will enable COPE to directly send its reports to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
This will allow these agencies to immediately initiate further legal action based on the findings.
