Sri Lanka, Oct. 5 -- The Central Bank of Sri Lanka purchased $64.2 million in net worth from the domestic foreign exchange market in September 2026, comprising $85 million in purchases and $20.8 million in sales. This follows a significant intervention in August 2026, when the central bank made a purchase of $579 million.

Addressing inquiries regarding why such a large purchase was made during a period when the dollar was declining against the backdrop of the rupee's depreciation in August, the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, explained the rationale behind the strategy.
