Catholic bishops express concern over proposal to extend retirement age of judges
Sri Lanka, Aug. 20 -- Deep concern emerged following the cabinet decision published on 27 July 2026 to increase the statutory retirement age of judges in Sri Lanka. The Catholic Bishops' Conference in Sri Lanka highlighted this position in an official statement released on 20 August 2026.
Upholding and safeguarding the independence of the judiciary, the rule of law, and the separation of powers remain of paramount importance at all times. The conference stated that an independent and impartial judiciary acts as an essential safeguard for justice, human dignity, fundamental rights, and the common good of all citizens.
