Sri Lanka, Oct. 8 -- The Sperm Bank established six months ago at the Castle Street Hospital for Women in Colombo has successfully resulted in 10 women conceiving, according to Hospital Director Ajith Kumara Dantanarayana.

The Director stated that sperm is deposited in the bank only after comprehensive formal medical testing is carried out on donors for several diseases.

Following the initial testing and deposit, donors are re-called after three months for a second round of testing. The sperm is only made ready for use once health is reconfirmed through these subsequent tests.

However, the Director pointed out that a challenge is the high cost incurred for liquid nitrogen, which is essential for storing the sperm during this period.
